School Life

Life at NLCS Hong Kong is a vibrant, happy, and exciting journey for our young learners. It is a community-focused environment, where every child is encouraged to grow and thrive. With a warm sense of belonging, pupils will not only build friendships but also develop essential life skills that will provide the best possible start to their education.

Facilities

The facilities at NLCS Hong Kong Junior School are designed to support the needs of our learners. The learning environment is stimulating, providing the perfect setting for pupils to explore their talents and discover new interests, fostering a love for learning. There are dedicated classrooms for each Grade, providing a base for every pupil and there are specialist classrooms for Science, Art, Music, Technology, Dance, Drama and PE.

We have a keen focus on reading and Grades 1 and 2 each have their own library. These ‘adventure libraries’ emphasise a love of reading and discovery. Performance is a key element of our curriculum. Our creative zone includes a dance and drama studio, the music department and media production hub. Innovation, technology and design are also well resourced with specialist facilities in our technology zone.

In addition, we have carefully designed outdoor spaces for play and learning. These areas allow children to engage with nature and participate in physical activities, promoting both cognitive and physical development.

Curriculum

The curriculum at NLCS Hong Kong is rich, diverse, academically ambitious and enquiry based. We challenge our students to develop new skills, knowledge, and understanding through a holistic approach to learning. Our teachers create an inspiring and creative atmosphere where young learners can thrive, embracing their natural curiosity and enthusiasm.

The curriculum ranges from core subjects to creative and exploratory activities, all delivered through expert and inventive teaching. We encourage every pupil to flourish in their own unique way

Enquire, Explore, Experience

In Grades 1 to 3, the majority of lessons are taught by the Class Teacher with the support of a Classroom Assistant. We focus on developing key skills and knowledge in Reading, Writing and Mathematics that underpin future learning. Much of their learning is through play and practical activities and is designed to inspire the children and encourage them to be curious and reflective. There is a strong emphasis on inter-disciplinary learning, enabling children to view subjects holistically. The class teacher not only guides the pupils academically but looks after them pastorally. The Class Teacher therefore has a complete picture of the child

Weekly lessons studying Mandarin, Chinese History, Culture and Philosophy, Physical Education, Dance and Music are taught by subject specialists.

Discover, Integrate, Apply

In Grades 4 to 6, most lessons are still taught by the Class Teacher with some support from a Classroom Assistant. The focus remains on learning through discovery and the integration and application of new knowledge and skills. The number of specialist lessons increases to incorporate Science and Information and Communication Technology. Specialist lessons continue in Mandarin, Chinese History, Culture and Philosophy, Physical Education, Dance and Music.

Pupils focus on cross-curricular links with common issues and ideas being emphasised, maintaining our themes-based approach. Pupils are encouraged to learn through enquiry and develop research and analysis skills through holistic, interdisciplinary project work.

Individual Care and Support

The atmosphere is supportive and nurturing, ensuring that every child feels valued and inspired to take on new challenges. Older students contribute to this community, acting as mentors and friends to the younger ones, fostering a positive and connected environment.

Kindness, respect, responsibility and honesty are at the heart of our Junior School pastoral system. Every child is well known, valued and supported. Every student has a class teacher to support them daily with all aspects of their school life. We also offer learning support through our inclusion team and emotional guidance through our counsellors.

Co-Curricular Programme

We believe in the value of wider activities. It is not an ‘optional extra’ but an integral part of education at NLCS Hong Kong. Each pupil is encouraged to develop new skills, interests and passions to help achieve a broad and balanced education. Our programme has tremendous breadth so that pupils can discover new activities and offers depth so that pupils can develop expertise.

Education beyond the classroom is highly valued at NLCS Hong Kong. A wide variety of trips are organised to enhance real world understanding and provide richness and personal meaning to education. Adventurous activities are extremely important in the development of many essential skills including resilience, flexibility and collaboration. Testing yourself in a challenging environment helps enhance self-knowledge and develops the ability to cope under pressure.
